German Gregorean Techno, Electric Violin, Electronica Industrial Punk

I had only a little bit of time today, so I've only got a few songs to share.

~When you think of German metal, industrial techno, and Gregorian chanting, what's the first thing to come to mind? E Nomine, of course. Formed in 1999, they started this project to make something they call "Monumental Dance," a combination of trance, techno, and Gregorian chanting, with some rock and metal influences. Anything by them is quite original, and very interesting. Das Omen from their third album Die Prophezeiung released in 2003 is a good example of their musical style. Enjoy!

~Vanessa Mae is a classically trained pianist and violinist. Playing piano since she was 3, and violin from 5, she has quite a lot of practice. Though she plays classical music, she does write some of her own music too. On top of that, the style in which she plays is different than other classical artists. Playing on an electric violin, and adding in techno elements to her songs, she completely brings classical songs and artists like Vivaldi and Beethoven's 5th back into popularity. The song I chose to share is called Devil's Trill, originally written by Giuseppe Tartini, and is from her album, the best of Vanessa Mae, released in 2002. It stand to mention that the Devil's Trill is considered one of the hardest songs for a violinist to play, due to having to master several different aspects of playing the violin just to attempt it. Have fun!

~Lastly I have an up and coming rock group described as industrial, electronica, and punk. Mindless Self Induldgence, or more commonly know as MSI, has started of as a little know group in New York, and is slowly becoming quite popular. I personally have seen them live, and they are some of the best stage men I've seen in a great while. Off their album titled Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy, their Second album released in 2000, Kill the Rock is a great song of theirs that has not seen as much publicity as their others have. Please enjoy!

Thanks for taking the time to read, and I look forward to getting even more readers and listeners. As always, if you have a request, or if you know a great obscure song or artist, Please email me at Alexander.the.okay@gmail.com, and I am more than willing to help accommodate!

Hungarian Folk, Israeli Techno, and Zombies!

Today entries are more on the "weird" side of obscure music. By no means does that imply it is not as well written or made, it's just a little more odd than what you are probably used to. Please Enjoy!

~The Moon And The Nightspirit is a group that started up in 2005. Consisting of lyricist and guitarist Mihaly Szabo, and vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Agnes Toth. Hailing from Hungary, they have not gained much publicity, though they still tour Europe for concerts. Their first album was available through Internet only, and therefore, not many sold. Obscure, and very pretty, The Moon and the Nightspirit has a unique sound. Renaissance style instrumentation, while re-telling the stories of Hungarian folk tales, they really have found an unexplored niche. In Hungarian folklore, a táltos is a shamanistic role, though not entirely the same. Power is given to them from birth, and the intrinsically know how to use it, they do not need instruments to perform their miracles, and they are placed upon the earth with a specific mission from God. According to folklore tradition, the égi táltos (or heavenly táltos) is Jesus Christ. So, while I do not know any Hungarian, I can guess what their song, égi táltos is about.

~Apocalyptica is odd. You see, they were VERY obscure for quite a while, known by few as an awesome quartet of cellos that played Metallica songs. Then they bursted into popularity when they did a song with the lead singer of HIM, Ville Valo, and Lauri Ylönen from the band The Rasmus, and made a song worthy of all the raw talent. Bittersweet may not be as obscure as other songs I've shared, but it is definitely worth a spot for being made by obscure artists. Please enjoy.

~Infected Mushroom is a type of techno you cannot forget about. Their use of unconventional instruments in techno coupled with their exceptional use of synth-electronica make all of their songs unique, while still driven and have a great beat. With album titles like Converting Vegetarians and Vicious Delicious, they are a great band to get to know. Please Enjoy Becoming Insane.

~Zombies! They want your Brains! And Jonathan Coulton seems to know what they want. If Zombies could intelligently, and coherently describe their every want and need, Jonathan Seem to know what they'd say. Re: Your brains just makes you want to laugh, because the zombie give a pretty goods argument for letting him in to eat them. From his album entitled Thing-a-week, Re: your brains is a favorite of mine.

French Hiphop, Melodic Metal, and a Rock and Roll Nerd

I Plan on making an entry every day, however, if I do, I cannot include such a large selection as I did with my first post. so, from here on in, I will more than likely include 3-4 songs per entry, depending on how much time I have to contribute to it. So, without further ado, I give you what you came for, your music.

~Yelle is something of an enigma. She is a happy ending story of a Myspace artist who rose to fame due to a single song, one that she made as a mockery of another french artist, Cuizinier. The original title of this song was Short Dick Cuizi, but the finished product was later entitled Je Veux Te Voir. Off of her first album, Pop-up, Je Veux Te Voir has helped Yelle make a name for herself. Elements of Hip-hop, Electronica, and Pop make this song addictive, and make you sing along, even though you don't know what the french means!

~Self Titled as an "American Indi/Roots Folk Jam Band," Dispatch certainly fit's the boot. Hailing from Middlebury, Vermont, this group uses elements from Ska, Reggae, Rock, Funk, Folk, and Flamenco. The song I chose to share today is a mellow one, with thoughtful lyrics, called The General. An anti-war song told in the perspective of a battle torn general realizing through dream the futility of the war he's fighting. Thought provoking, and a great tune, I highly recommend anything by Dispatch.

~Described as a Symphonic Power Metal band, and hailing from Finland, the land of metal, Nightwish is truly unique in their sound. Popular in Finland, Germany, Norway, Greece, Slovenia, and Hungary, They have remained a bit obscure for British and American listeners. Never becoming popular until their second album, and reaching the top ten charts in 6 countries on their fifth, Nightwish has had an exponetially growing fan base. Nemo, from the album Once is a great taste of their song style, lyrical analysis, and beautiful vocals in a melodic metal sense.

~Tim Minchin is an Australian stand-up Comedian, Musician and Actor. He is most widely known for his musical comedy, that includes several of his songs that'll make you roar with laughter. The selection I have for you tonight is a song titled If You Really Loved Me, and it explains what is needed for a woman to be able to do for him to woo him and steal his heart. From his album titled So Rock, this song will wow you with his piano playing skills and well written verse, and roll of the floor laughing at the lyrics.

Techno, Jazz and Dark Cabaret

For my first post, I plan on giving you all a nice big helping of my Music! Aren't you all excited? Haha, you should be. I've got some Jazz, Techno, Dark Cabaret, and much much more. Please, check them out!

~First off, I'm going to share 2 songs from an anime I fell in love with, called Baccano! The anime was quite a refreshing change from the norm, taking place in prohibition US, and involving some quite intriguing characters. I loved it all, and highly recommend seeing it!

The first song is called Gun's & Roses, and is by a group called Paradise Lunch. Good luck finding much about them, because it seems they are very new, and made only a few songs. Very obscure indeed. They are an all girl jazz group from Japan, and boy, they really can play. This is an instrumental version of the song(The one used in the anime) however, there is a vocal one out there, and I'm willing to post it upon request. Loud brass, melodic sax, and great whispering vocals make this an amazing addition to any library.

This next song is from the same anime, Baccano!, however, by a different artist. Yoshimori Makoto is a native Japanese pianist, composer, and orchestrator. He is best known for composing the soundtracks to animes, Baccano! not being the only one. Of the same jazz and big band genre as Gun's and Roses, I'm sure you'll enjoy Nagai Nagai Yume no Naka no Utage

~I have been a long time lover and follower of the drum and bass group, Pendulum, however, I hesitate to continue to classify them as drum and bass. Yes, they still have the elements of techno, but I feel they are branching out more into rock, or at least industrial. I have two of their more recent songs, both from the album In Silico.

The first song is called Propane Nightmares, and starts off with some great brass, and makes you think it may turn out to be a nice jazz, or ska song. They quickly make you reconsider. Strong bass, moving lyrics, and great drive. I love Propane Nightmares.

Second, is another song from the same album, called The Tempest. The title may conjure up some bad memories from your high school drama course, but the song is much better than the Shakespearean form of torture. Echoing electric guitar, drums that you want to play air drums with, and an amazing chorus riff than makes you get goose bumps. I give you, The Tempest.

~Owl City is a little known Group of one. The artist of Owl City is Adam Young, and his major influences are disco and European electronica. Very mellow, and highly romantic, with amazing lyrics and melodies, On The Wing is a great selection from his second album, Maybe I'm Dreaming.

~It's the late 90's and you hear "I'm blue a-ba-dee-a-ba-die" on the radio. Again. I'm not sure I can run into a single person who has not heard of Eiffel 65, or that song, but it seems no one knows of any other songs of theirs. Like all one hit wonders, they disappeared into obscurity, hiding the other masterworks of theirs within their wake. Move Your Body is a great example of the style of Eiffel 65, without the horrid sense of wanting to grab a shotgun and ruining a perfectly good MP3 player. From the their first album entitled Europop, I give you Move Your Body.

~The next two songs are so deliciously evil, and they make you want to creep out your close friends by singing along.

Voltaire is an artist who seems to have dark cabaret down to a fine art. Cuban-American, and teacher at the New York School of Visual Arts, he ironically shares his name with the pen name of a french enlightenment writer. When you're Evil is a perfect example of both his musical style, and a peek into his genius. Melodic lyricism, and poetic meter, When You're Evil is a great song to memorize the lyrics to.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds is a band I'm sure you've never heard of. If you have, you've heard of their album, Murder Ballads. Rife with songs poetically and romantically describing the many joys of smashing in your loved ones head in, while sitting in a bed of roses is just one example of the many grotesquely gorgeous compilations. Told in the perceptive of a homicidal little girl, The Curse of Millhaven is a great little diddy, and makes you just want to sing along.
